     Our Mission

The mission of Athelas Institute, Inc. is to provide a variety of quality educational, rehabilitative, residential, employment and individual support options for individuals with developmental disabilities within a supportive milieu, utilizing natural supports to maximize opportunities for individual growth.

History

Athelas began its journey in 1976. The first mission was to develop innovative work and educational opportunities in the community for individuals who had previously been unable to do so.  

Educationally, Athelas developed a program in conjunction with Catonsville Community College which provided classes on campus and access to college facilities.  This was a first of its kind for programs in Maryland and continues to this day.  

Over time, Athelas has developed residential services, individual support services, and specialized services for individuals with severe head injuries, autism, and those who are dually diagnosed with both mental retardation and mental health issues.  

Since its inception, Athelas Institute continues to be a recognized leader in the field for providing creative programs and plans.
